Would Nova Scotia have been better served being part of the United States?

Inspired by this passage:

When Canada became a nation in 1867, both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were among the original four provinces. But as the country expanded west in the 20th century, the importance of Atlantic Canada diminished and its economy deteriorated—leaving behind an intriguing series of “What if?” questions. What if people like Eddy or Allan had succeeded in their missions? What if Congress had been able to restrain the overzealous privateers? Could Nova Scotia have become the 14th colony to join what would become the United States?

Apparently most residents of Nova Scotia were recent New Englander ex-pats anyways.

No they would not have been better off being part of the USA, at least economy and standard of living wise. put it this way, is it better to be earn $120,000 (in yen converted to dollars) a year as a Japanese citizen in 2000 or be a duke in the 1500s? Well, the duke is certainly more important, but I don't think he's living a better life. Nova Scotia would be a more important part of the USA, but being left behind in Canada left them better off.
