Would North Korea's survival to 2018 be considered ASBish

North Korea by the 1980s had an economy heavily depended on Soviet subsidies. In the 1990s with the collapse of the USSR, it lost those subsidies and was surrounded by US-friendly non-Communist Russia, Reformist China which provided limited aid and US backed South Korea. The loss of Soviet subsides led to famines which might have killed over a million North Koreans in a relatively small country.

Under those circumstances, one would have expected the regime to collapse in almost any AH scenario, especially since far more stable Communist regimes collapsed all over the world, is the survival of the DPRK an "ASBish" event?

Well, not necessarily since the collapse of communism occurred mostly in Europe. The Chinese regime had cracked down effectively at Tianiamen in '89 so North Korea stood a chance. Of course, it would have been ASBish had Chinese communism crumbled too.

Not ASB when you take into consideration the factors that have made North Korea the "Hermit Kingdom". North Korea is situated on a peninsula with the world's most militarized border to the south and two semi-friendly nations to the north that want to keep the regime stable because if it collapses it becomes their problem.

The result is a situation where the regime can control the supply of aid into the nation from abroad while tightly restricting the flow of information and movement to and from the outside world. All they really need to do to stay in power is keep the military fed and the Party firmly disciplined along ideological lines which can be accomplished through purges. It's a nightmare but a plausible nightmare.

Plus they got a reasonable amount of it aid from the West. Like the person who's madly in love the US with North Korea we will take any compliment or commitment without question. Basically in many ways and North Korea made a lot of countries it's bitch the u.s. is the biggest one
