Would Newfoundland and Labrador be better off if it never joined Canada?

Newfoundland and Labrador joined Canada sixty years ago today. (March 31st) A move a lot of Newfoundlanders regret. Newfoundland was an independent country once and many felt it should have become independent again.

My question is would Newfoundland and Labrador be better off today if they stayed out of confederation?

Did it lose out any ?

At the time it joined, it was IIRC a dominion in abeyance with a crown-appointed governor.

Did lots of people migrate to Canada, or did lots of people go to Canada from Europe who might otherwise have gone to Newfoundland ?

Again IIRC the reason for putting its dominion status in abeyance was because of bankruptcy, it basically was not self-sufficient enough. Could this be changed ?

Honestly, I think its the other way around. Canada would have been far better off, not taking in Newfoundland. Being that Canada, over its lifetime has been offered much better options, such as Turks and Caicos, or even Bermuda....taking on Newfoundland was like buying a Lada....It was a BAD DEAL!

Probably not. The idea is popular now because of all their oil revenues, and an independent-in-1999 Newfoundland could probably do very well for itself, but never joining Canada they'd have 50 long, hard years to get through first. I think on ballance they're better off as is.

uh... why, exactly?

Keep in mind this is the guy who said the US Civil War precludes any Quebecois right to self-determination.

Didn't they lose what independence they'd previously had during the Great Depression, when they reverted to a UK colony?

I think joining the confederation was probably an improvement over that.

I disgaree. True newfoundland has been a have not province for years. But in the long run, canada is better off with newfoundland than without it.
BTW my dad is a Newfoundlander.

I like having independent Newfoundland in my timelines, playing New Zealand to Canada's Australia- it's a rather low-populated island that wasn't annexed by its much bigger neighbor, for no reason.
