Would former slaves mainly stay in the South if rights were assured

If by whatever means former slaves and their descendants had full Civil and Political rights by 1900 would they mainly stay in the Southern states and fewer got North than in OTL?

They would have no reason to leave, then if you added some southern industry there would be even less reason for them to move north. There would be some northern flow just less and it would depend on how they were treated in the north.

The population of the north was not overly "welcoming" to an influx of negroes in the mid-18th century - being against the institution of slavery did not mean they wanted one of "them" living next door, or competing for jobs (cf: actions during draft riots in NYC July 1863). In fact there was not much of an exodus of blacks out of the south in the wake of the ACW, some but not much, the exodus came later in the late 20's to early 40's when large numbers of southern black went north to fill job openings in northern factories. If the post ACW south adjusts to a reasonable level of black equality then this flow may be reduced, but its basically about jobs. To keep blacks from moving north need a combination of a comfortable environment and employment.

Comparatively few Southern blacks moved north or west after the ACW. Many former slaves became sharecroppers on the plantations where they had once worked as slaves. The real migrations came during and post-WWII to work in the factories. Detroit in particular attracted blacks from all over the South as the auto industry exploded in the mid-late 1940s.

Unfortunately, this is probably asb. Unless you exile most of the white cofederates (how, and where?), or swamp them eg european immigrants, same problem, or both, problem compounded.

Yeah. In order for this to happen plantation owners would have to acknowledge that their slaves are not property. That is....highly unlikely.

You know, there was a period post civil war when blacks were able to vote, hold office, and go to school in the South. So you just gotta suppress the terrorist campaign which stripped those rights away.

I think if you had succesfully confiscated land and given it as compensation to fomrer slaves and and had for maybe 20 years exiled the leadership it would have worked

I don't get the question. Former slaves and their descendants did mainly stay in the South in our timeline:

Only about 54% of African Americans live in the South.

Incidentally the attached map gives a better and more correct idea of where African Americans live.

So 150 years later the majority still live in the place that has just a third of the overall population? That counts as "mainly" to me...

I'd think more of them would stay but still you have all the promise of wealth and jobs in the north and the same old rural poverty in the south. This was the more critical factor than rights I believe, what with rights up north not being too great either and many of them being quite accepting of their lot as the shitty way things were. A lot would still go north.

Nevada? Interesting.
And whats with the Montana dot?

This was also the period when northern federal garrisoned the south and enforced the rules.

The probability of that continuing until the whites of the south accepted the new rules is even lower than that of being able to remove enough confederate whites.

The problem was not that were a few ,,terrorists,, the problem is the ones that inevitably happened werent punished, by and large, by southern judges and juries.
