I have a keen historical interest in East Germany that stems mainly from my interest in and long time collection of NVA militaria. In fact, I am currently resurrecting an old time line from the depths of my hard drive that I started several years ago, and am keen to continue it. I often hear many different opinions about the region since 1990, with a large number of easterners seemingly having feel let down by unification, or at least, the way in which it occurred. It seems to be one of those common conceptions that unification was handled in a bad way. Putting aside the issue of whether or not this was actually the case, and whether or not the Federal government could have done anything more to help considering the differences between the two regions, would East Germany have been better off as staying seperate from the West following the collapse of the ruling socialist party? Would remaining as a seperate country beyond 1990, and for at least a considerable time afterwards, have served to benefit the region more than it has in OTL? Or would it have actually done the opposite?
