would a Christian Middle East, including Persia, be considered part of Western civ?

There's another interesting question: if Islam doesn't exist as a major religion, it's likely that West Africa will gradually become Catholic through the Sahara trade routes. Ethiopia will also have a stronger connection with the "core" of Christendom of Europe. Would Africans, in this scenario, also be considered western?

West Africa might be depending on how much contact there is (and certainly will be if there are a few rich Malian catholic princesses around to marry), while Ethiopia (and Coptic Egypt) would probably slot into the same category as the Persians w.r.t. 'Christians but with funny rites'.

This could do wonders for race relations though if we've got West Africa more integrated into the system earlier.
