Worst Screws in AH

Mexico in What Madness Is This (wiped off the face of the earth)
There was a book where Europe was completely wiped out by the Black Death (?)

Israel in Return of the Rodina. An insane Russian President nuked it eighty times in the Sixty Minutes War with Russia getting off with its capital nuked (and said insane Russian President being killed).

Humanity as a whole got pretty screwed over in the Draka series. Because somehow a bunch of racist slavers from the American South that exile themselves to South Africa can in just a couple of centuries become supermen who conquer not only the world but the greater galaxy.

I was going to say this and even then a few countries' fates stand out. China for instance has the Taipeng Rebellion take over, which weakens the country enough for them to be annexed easily by Japan and then the Draka take over. Neither Japan nor the Draka are indicated to face particularly fierce resistance from the population which is odd given how prevalent resistance to invasion was in OTL 20th century China.

There are also some pretty major screws present in one of the relatively hard published alternate history works: For Want of a Nail. Russia fares pretty poorly in that timeline, with the United States of Mexico taking Alaska and Siberia from them with relative ease in the midst of domestic instability and then getting easily curbstomped by the Germans in the World War. A lot of Central and South America also gets screwed to give the USM more territory. Taiwan and the Philippines also get stuck under the thumb of a megacorporation that develops nuclear weapons which is pretty shitty.

France in TL-191. They basically endure an OTL China-esque Century of Humiliation from the mid 19th Century through the mid-20th Century.

Three humiliating defeats in war at the hands of Germany across three generations. The decimation of their population in the First Great War. They regress from being one of Europe’s revolutionary democracies back to absolutist monarchy. And finally, after all that, their beloved and iconic capitol city, along with the king who was a living symbol of their nation, is incinerated by a superbomb, and while we don’t know many details of the post-Second Great War European peace, chances are it won’t be kind. All of this while they were a main ally to the perpetrators of the century’s defining genocide. One long string of humiliation, disgrace, demoralization, and shattered identity.

Almost like Stirling didn't actually think through any of that series or something.

Ever read Decades of Darkness? France is beaten over and over by Germany in wars of aggression that France keeps starting, ending the story by being broken into a bunch of tiny statelets, and losing all territory East of Paris. And like in TL-191 they go down as an ally of the worst the TL has to offer, the *United States. Latin America also gets quite thoroughly fucked over in that story.

Also France Germany, Russia, and everything in between in AANW.

Mexico Ascendant's USA. It lost every military conflict between 1812 and ttl's ww1, never reached the pacific, and didn't even have naval power to conquer cuba when the south successfully pushed for it. The only saving grace for it as a power was greater integration of african territories and industrialization off of them. But even then it was horrendously screwed.

A Hohenstaufen united HRE under Frederick Barbarossa is effectively a French screw. France wouldn't have been able to take advantage of the collapse of Arles and the fragmentation of the HRE to pursue territorial expansion. The HRE under the Hohenstaufens would have been a powerful state that would be able to assert its influence in France. The Angevin Empire might ally with the Hohenstaufens against the Capetians here. It might also be a Byzantine screw since Emperor Heinrich VI wanted to march on Constantinople and take the city for himself which he may have possibly done with the state of the Byzantine Empire under the Angeloi.

If the Ottonians survive, there might be more of a Roman revival in this HRE with a longer Ottonian Renaissance. Otto III wanted to rebuild Italy and restore old Roman institutions and its legal system in the Empire. France at this point was a fragmented mess with the King having very limited power. Its also a Papal States Screw since Otto III refused to acknowledge the donations of Pepin and wanted to put the Pope under his direct overlordship much like with the Byzantine Empire and the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Napoleonic France surviving is essentially a Germany and Prussia screw since its firmly under the thumb of the Grand Armee and France.

A Byzantine victory at Yarmouk or a continued Maurcian/Justinian dynasty is essentially and Islam screw because Rome and Persia would not have been bled white by twenty long years of fighting a total war. Thus the Byzantines and Persians would have more resources to actually put up more of a fight against the Arabs. Its also a Balkans Slavic screw since a successful Maurician dynasty means that he has secured the Balkan frontier like he was on the verge of doing in otl before he got assassinated.

Not sure if it's as much of a US-Screw as Man In The High Castle but Bring The Jubilee is up there. The US is basically a shell of its former self being, filled with poverty and serving as little more than a rump state between British Canada and the superpower that is the CSA which conquers everything in the Americas south of it. Well, until the ending undoes it all. The US is probably even worse off in the 2004 mockumentary CSA because it outright gets conquered by the CSA as well who in turn conquers more territory beyond the Americas than even in Bring the Jubilee.

I just don't see why TL-191 USA and Germany would get into a USA/SOVIET type Cold War and certainly not a hot war. .... What do they have to fight over ?

Because Turtledove doesn’t have an original thought in his head and a Cold War between the two previously allied Powers is what happened OTL?

On the topic, how about the USA in DuBois’ Resurrection Day? Victorious (technically) in the “Cuban War”, at the cost of a devastated eastern seaboard and various cities close to military bases, they’ve been reduced to the status of international pariah and dependent on British aid. Ruled by a military dictatorship, their military personnel are considered war criminal and not welcome anywhere in the world. To top it all, they’ve got to watch the British Empire rise from the ashes and begin reversing decolonisation.

Slovenia and the Arab World in The Footprint of Mussolini

The Slovenian political and cultural capital of Ljubljana
is completely destroyed and rebuilt with Italian architecture and inhabitants.
The Slovenian language is
completely banned, thousands of Slovenes migrate abroad and the Slovenian diaspora is so disconnected that for the 21st century the Slovenian language and identity are decades away from extinction.

The Arab world is
devastated, with some of its biggest capitals nuked, air and chemically bombarded. The Arab language and identity are suppressed, several nations colonized and effectively Europeanized. There is no longer a standard Arabic language, but dialects or other languages are favored. The aftermath of the Second Arabian War is effectively an event of civilizational destruction.

Maybe only China in Twilight of the Red Tsar got more screwed and that's realitvely as at least there was a Chinese state, culture, language and people after what happened.

Show your anti muslim bias, Al-Qaddis was at the same time and the beat the Persian without any help, the same the romans too

Germany and Mexico are always screwed

Germany was not screwed in DoD.

What? Do you know anything about the thirty years preceeding the Muslim conquests? The Romans and Persians had spent 26 years beating the stuffing out of one another, were both broke, and had only a fraction of their armies from 600 still intact. The Persians were fighting civil wars after multiple assassinations of kings. Pointing out that the Arabs got lucky in their timing is not "anti-Muslim" bias.
