Worse 2009 flu pandemic

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ng-Ukrainian-super-flu-killed-189-people.html

During the swine flu outbreak, Ukraine seemed to have been hit quite bad compared to other countries, and seemed to have suffered from a mutation of three different flu stains, including H1N1, which killed hundreds in only days, forcing the government to quarantine areas and deply military units and countries to close border crossings.

Thankfully, it was contained, but what would happen if this mutant flu strain managed to spread, say a flight from Kiev landed in Warsaw or some border guards in Romania caught it from Ukrainians crossing the border. What happens ?

"Quite bad" in what way? More people ill? More deaths? The percentages would probably work out to pretty much the same in the rest of Europe.

The fact that it was dealt with so quickly IOTL probably means even if a "Spanish flu"-like strain crosses to Poland or Romania it would be contained. In any case, by 2009 scientists and governments have prepared themselves quite extensively for an influenza pandemic, so it wouldn't be anything like Contagion, for example. There's already too many stockpiled anti-virals vaccines, which may not work perfectly on this new strain but would definitely keep it from spreading throughout the world.

I think the best case for a dangerous pandemic to get started would be if it started in some Third World country that receives little attention and doesn't have the organization to contain it. Then you could have such massive amounts of infection that it becomes impossible to keep it from slipping into other countries.

Best case scenario for the OP, in my humble opinion: something like a weak Spanish flu die-off in Ukraine, Eastern and Southern Europe, parts of western Russia, maybe one or two of the Baltic countries. Then a random infected Russian finds his way to India without being screened, it explodes there, the infection burns through some Middle Eastern nations, Indochina, maybe the PRC, maybe sub-Saharan Africa before being contained by the First World nations. It causes a huge scare, shakes up the economy a bit, kills so many people, and then everyone gets vaccinated and it disappears.
