What if the world’s first motor car, reputed to be made by Karl Benz, exploded in spectacular flames when publicly demonstrated for the first time, taking its chief designer/builder with it to a fiery death.

Could this catastrophe have any major effect upon the early development of petrol driven motor cars?

Could old fashion horse drawn vehicles, as well as steam powered vehicles, continue to dominate long into the 20th Century.

Or could diesel engines, in development around the same time, replace petrol engines & the motor car still comes into being around the same time as the OTL?

Anything else?
