World Without Mormons?

A world without Mormons?

It's interesting to me, as a Mormon, to see what other people would miss or be glad to be rid of about us. About the ethical and moral status of a Mormon-less world, ultimately it comes down to what you view as a "better" or "worse" world. I could see arguments going either way.

For me personally, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't exist without Mormonism. Conversion to Mormonism was the primary reason why two different lines of my ancestors left two different countries in Europe to come to the United States. Without Mormonism, there would have been no opportunity for my Swedish ancestors to meet my English ancestors, and my grandfather would never have been born.

But, apart from a spate of such demographic changes in the population, I doubt there would be a great deal of broad-scale changes. Surely, the West would develop differently, and the state boundaries would likely be different, but, I don't see much opportunity for far-reaching butterflies beyond that.

I would also not exist. Conversion to Mormonism was the reason my Danish ancestors met my Italian ancestors.

Less immigration to the United States? You could argue that some of the Saints that came to the USA would have come anyway without the religion, or that the increased population of countries like England and Denmark without Latter-Day Saint would mean less food and thus more normal immigration to the States... but conversion to the LDS Church until the 20th century meant that Utah became your desired destination. If they had to move without the religion, they could choose a number of places to immigrate to, not necessarily the United States and definitely not just the American West.
