World War Two Early.

Here is the premise...

There was an assassination attempt on Hitler (one of the many). Here is what happen in IRL:

One assassin (who was not a party member) bought a gun from a shop with French Francs. He then tried to take a shot at Hitler before the Munich Olympics. A waving flag held by one of the people in the crowd messed up his shot and he hit an innocent bystander and spent the rest of his life in a delightful prison. As for the shopkeeper, the SS only asked why he accepted French Francs - he was fined and not even punished any further or farther than that.

Now for the difference:

Hitler is killed on opening ceremonies.

The SS finds evidence of a French plot.

How would Germany fare in an earlier war against France?

Germany was barely "ready" in 1939. Earlier, when Germany reoccupied the Rhineland, the military response would have been like brave Sir Robin, "run away, run away" and was explicitly planned like that. Even in 1938, at Munich, had the Czechs resisted along prepared defensive lines and assuming the British and French assistance was limited to air strikes in Germany, minor border movements and a blockade, Germany would have been in difficulty. A POD might be the French, supported at least verbally by the British, say "oh no you don't" when Germany tries to reoccupy the Rhineland and then reintroduces at least a token occupation force to prevent it as well as demanding full access for inspectors and observers to confirm Germany stays within Versailles limits. If Germany resists, you have a "war" but not WWII.
