World War III as told through newspaper headlines, clippings, and articles

In the same vein as the Second Korean War thread I made a year or so back, we'll be attempting to document World War III (1957-1963) through the use of newspaper headlines, clippings, and articles. Anything deemed 'too ASB' will be vetoed on the consensus of all posters involved. This scenario is partly inspired by Operation Dropshot, and John J. Reilly's take on World War III in 1957.

To start us off, I'll post our few POD headlines to make this work.

WAR!
Pres. Stevenson: Uncle Joe had better say his prayers

By MICHAEL M. WALDON
Special to the New York Times

Washington, Friday, Feb. 15--The bombing raids that characterized yesterday's 'Bloody Valentine' incident over Germany and other areas of Western and Southern Europe plunged NATO forces into war with members of the Warsaw Pact, following a breakdown of negotiations with the Soviet Union over an increased American presence in Western Europe.

The attacks, which put all of Berlin in Soviet hands and rained terror upon West German cities, leave thousands dead as Soviet and East German troops surge across the North German plain in preparation for a complete assault on NATO powers in Europe. Many American troops stationed in West Germany were killed in the assault, while others were taken as POWs early this morning.

President Stevenson, in addressing a joint-session of Congress yesterday, asked for a declaration of war against the Warsaw Pact powers, notably the Soviet Union and Red China, the latter of which launched an invasion of Formosa yesterday morning. United States Pacific Command was placed on high alert, and fortifications in the Japanese islands were made a priority to ward off Soviet invasion. The President received his declaration of war, which was less than unanimous, with a few isolationist representatives dissenting on the measure. Nevertheless, and outstanding majority of Congress gave their assent to the President, who then flew to New York to gain UN approval for the conflict with the Warsaw Pact.

The United Nations approved Stevenson's request, largely because of a boycott of the session by the Soviet Union. Generalissimo Stalin attacked the United Nations as having become a bourgeois tool of capitalist powers in a speech to the Soviet politburo last night. Chairman Mao of Red China has likewise promised steadfast support for the Soviet cause, and has begun attacks upon Formosa and Pacific islands allied with the United States early this morning.

In Britain, Prime Minister Anthony Eden has formed a coalition government with the opposition Labor Party. Hugh Gaitskell, the leader of the Labor Party, will become Deputy Prime Minister.

Swiss Site Chosen for 1960 Olympics

NEW YORK, June 16 -Lausanne was narrowly selected today as the site of the 1960 Olympic Games reported from Paris.

Voting at the Paris Meeting of the International Olympic Committee was: Lausanne 30, Rome 29.

The Mayor of Lausanne (Jean Peitrequin) was overjoyed with the results. Upon recieving confirmation, he cried out, "We have won. We have won. This is a wonderful day. We have won." Excited citizens crowded around to congratulate him on the news.

Meanwhile in Rome, disappointed Italians are already preparing to apply again in 1959 to host the 1964 Summer Olympics. "We were truly hoping that the Olympics would be scheduled in Rome, to make up for the loss of 1908," said Lord Mayor Salvatorre Rebecchini, "Although we respect the decision, we hope that the games will be able to come to Rome in four years."

Delegations from seven cities presented their claims yesterday to stage the 1960 summer games. They were Lausanne, Rome, Brussels, Budapest, Detroit, Mexico City and Tokio. Voting takes place tomorrow for the site of the winter games.

Although most queries have yet to be answered by the President of the IOC, many believe that Lausanne's bid was helped by increased tensions between the United States and the USSR...
