Bit of an idea I've had. What would it take for the Great War to break out in the 1890s, how would the war go ( I think the Triple Alliance was signed at this time) and what would be the ramifications of such an event?

The Great War of 189- had it starting with "an attempt... to assassinate Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria, at a mining town named Samakoff, about forty miles south of Sofia. It is said that the Prince, who had been shooting in the Balabancha Balkans, was driving into Samakoff towards evening yesterday, when his carriage was stopped, and he was attacked by a number of men armed with knives and pistols..."

If you haven't read the book already, you might find it interesting.

Wasn't this before a process had been developed that allowed nations to develop their own gunpowder rather than rely on imported guano? That could have an impact for quite a few.

Off the cuff, I thought they figured this out in the 1860s. And smokeless powder was invented in the late 1800s?

The Haber process to fix nitrogen was not perfected until 1909 and the industrial Haber-Bosch process was not until 1913. The earliest nitrogen fixing process was not until 1895. Maybe if the guano deposits were less extensive in Chile there may be a demand earlier for a different source?
