World War against America

How do you make it so an alliance consisting of all the major European Great Powers enter a large-scale conflict (a World War) against the United States of America? I'd guess that the Europeans would have to see the Americans as a huge threat for this to happen, or at the least have radically opposing ideologies with one side belligerant enough (like the Nazis) as to push the other into war.

Who would be victorious in such a conflict, and how would the post-war world look more or less? All of this is assuming a timeframe between 1900 and 1960, of course.

P.S. For the purposes of this thread, European Great Powers means France, Great Britain, and Germany; if you can get Russia into the alliance that would be great too.

Maybe a Communist USA? If this USA is going around encouraging the Great Powers' colonies to rise up, that could be seen as a sufficiently threatening action to warrant a war. I'm not sure how you'd get the Germans to join, though...

Here's a scenario: Germany wins a crushing victory in WWI, reducing France to a puppet and taking large numbers of French colonies. Russia gets off relatively easy, only losing Poland, Finland, and western Ukraine. Britain gets off with a white peace.

In the interwar, the US steadily falls apart. Britain reconciles itself to German domination of the Continent, Russia is distracted by the ever-growing chaos that is China, and Germany grows steadily more right-wing in an effort to keep its new sphere if influence together. France chafes under German rule.

In an alt-Great Depression, the USA goes Communist, while Britain goes full-on fascist. France waffles between Communism and fascism, before a Communist coup turns into a joint British/German/Italian intervention to prevent Communism from gaining a foothold in Europe.

Of course, after the US gets its bearings, its starts seriously promoting Communism worldwide. The French Communists are found armed with large numbers of American weapons, and many Communist agitators in German Indochina (formerly French) have American literature. When a Communist revolt breaks out in Canada, and the US intervenes, Britain declares war on the US. They face several initial defeats, and the US manages to gain a foothold in Ireland. The Germans, alarmed, join in, along with the rest of their European allies, France included. Russia joins in after Communist Japan (another revolution made in the USA) restarts the Russo-Japanese War.

The Second World War is on.

That is probably very ASB, starting with the German gains after WWI, but it's the best I could do. Communist Japan could probably be removed as well.

Well, first off, your proposed time line would probably have to be Post WWII, because early 20th Century US attitude was pretty isolationist, and American industrial capacity wasn't really appreciated until the war. What is the threat of an isolationist US?

Secondarily, in light of the Second Amendment and the sheer amount of weapons owned by Americans, i'd really hate to be a part of the general staff that would plan such an invasion --Think of Switzerland with a much larger geographical area, and a bunch of WWII combat veterans who haven't forgotten how it was done.

After all of that, take into consideration of where one would initiate the invasion of CONUS. As much as people deride the movie Red Dawn, i can't think of a better place to invade except though Mexico. The last thing i'd want to do is try to land an invasion force in New York City, Boston, or Miami or anywhere in between. Same goes for the West Coast.

Bottom line, logistically, tactically and strategically it's a cast iron bitch.
