There are a number of ATL where a single power ends up with both a significant amount of territory on a continent and on an Island where both parts are *full and equal* parts of the country. These range from any TL where a single power holds parts of Scandinavia and the Isle of Britain to any TL where any of the British Monarchs hold France to the Sixth Column by Heinlein with China and Japan as one country.

But we just don't have that in OTL. As far as I can tell, the most powerful country in OTL with anywhere close to equality in Power between its continental and island parts is Malaysia and Malaysia came into being in that form from a vote of various British controlled colonies. (Perhaps Tanzania should fall into that category as well, but was equally a vote)

So are there significant forces *against* the concept or is OTL simply chance in that regards?
