World in Conflict Alternate History, Pick your POD

So anyone who hasn't played the game World in Conflict(firstly you really should play it, it's a great game) the scenario goes like this. The Soviet Union suffering economic hardships tries to blackmail western Europe, but the western powers decide to call the Russians bluff resulting in a Russian invasion of Western Germany and Southeastern France. After getting stuck in a quagmire along the European front the Russians try a sneak attack in Seattle which also bogs down after a few weeks. The Chinese then throw their lot in with the Russians and decide to reinforce the Russian occupation of Seattle which is then defeated by a desperate counterattack by heavily understrength US forces.

So the question is what do you see as the POD for this alternate history to happen?

Keep in mind other things of note:

-France is still part of the military component of NATO with their forces operating in a unified command structure with other allied troops. In OTL this was not the case and the French most definetly weren't militarily involved in NATO.

-The Chinese appearing to be friendlier to the Russians than in OTL, it is highly unlikely in actual history that the Chinese would have joined the Russians against the US especially after the Russians had so obviously bitten off more than they could chew at the battle of Cascade Falls(see below)

-The US government being willing to detonate a nuclear weapon on american soil, which seems highly unlikely under most any circumstances, the Star Wars Program bluff used as explanation in the game doesn't seem feasable in OTL as even without a missile defense program the Russians would still be likely avoid nuclear escalation due to MAD, without an alteration of history that is.

-There is no mention of a Russian invasion of Afganistan. although not necissarily a difference as omition from the story doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

-The Russians here appear to have considerably more forces than in OTL. Contrary to popular belief the Russians didn't have the readiness or numbers along the Iron Curtain that everyone believed they did. Although the Russians might have been able to mount a war in western europe it is doubtful they could have also invaded the continental US simultaneously. Especially not with the cost of an occupation in Afganistan.

If I missed anything let me know.

Another thing :
- Why didn't NATO use her (tactical) nukes???
- Invasion of Continental USA via disguised cargo ships is impossible (they ripped that plot up from some novel too)
- A nuke ordered down by a Colonel?
- It seems the Soviets invaded Iceland too.

I don't see a plausible PoD on the way...
