I think its a very modern way of looking at it to think that Australia is integral. Even under Britain it was federated from a number of completely separate colonies - consider that Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, Victoria's youngest son, was angling for a Governorship of just ONE of these colonies.

I don't think it at all unlikely that the continent would end up split between different colonies from different empires

The last wave was for sheer conquering for the sake of conquering for ego reasons and benefited nobody, mostly after 1770:
1. Most of Africa
2. Indochina.

None of these reasons existed in Australia.

I'd say conquering a continent counts as an ego boast. We could see a Scramble for Australia with the continent being divided among the major powers.

We could see Australia split between the British, French and Germans

Well, the Dutch were also vainly conquering all of Indonsia for little reason but 'well it is there' so I imagine there'd be a chunk of Australia left for them too. Or maybe just a united New Guinea in exchange for not bothering in Australia.

There's a difference between settling a land and conquering something that's heavily populated. It's expensive to form settlement colonies.

Well, as I did include New Guinea in my post... the Netherlands took half of that, at least nominally, and it was probably less accessible than Australia.

With a late POD, I'd say the French or the Dutch. If the Portuguese remained kingpins of the Indian Ocean trade I'd say Portugal. Hell, I'd say that whoever dominates Indian Ocean trade is going to be the one to colonize these lands. IMO, that kicks the Spanish right out as an option considering their preference for sailing across the Pacific with their treasure fleets to China. So I don't think it'd be impossible to see a Turkish/Arab/Persian/Indian/Chinese Australia if you go faaaar back enough.
