Winds & currents for India-Australia or Indonesia-Australia Trade

I've been recently thinking about contact between South Indians and Australia and Papua during the expansion of Indian/Hindu culture to Southeast Asia, roughly around the 5th century onward. I was wondering if winds and currents prevented them from further exploring south and east to Australia and Papua.

Do the trade winds allow for reasonably decent travel back from Western Australia to India? And could ships rely on the Leeuwin currents to travel south from Java or Bali? I'm not very familiar with maritime stuff...
