This is a very rough scenario that I need help with. In the election of 1916, democratic candidate woodrow Wilson promissed to keep America out of the European conflict. So he keeps his promiss. This scenario also involves the Zimmerman note. Germany convinces mexico to ally with them, but they keep the alliance a secret. Germany purchases arms from the U.S.(like everyone was doing at the time), and them does a combination of selling, renting, leasing, and giving of Arms to the Mexican military. This would make more difficult for the U.S. to trace the weapons back to Germany, after all, they could have bought those weapons from any European country. Mexico does a pre-emptive strike against America before Germany tells them to. This act of war is reponded with the United States declaring war on Mexico in the summer of 1917. This prevents any possible attempts of U.S. intervention in Europe. The czar falls in Russia just like in our timeline, but now there are no U.S. soldiers to boost morale in the Allied soldiers on the western front.

Some of this seems a little unlikely, but it is not entirely implausible. As long as the Mexican-German alliance is kept secret it might work, but when mexico attacks America before Germany gives the order, the alliance might be exposed, or revoked secretly.

If the U.S. were to go to war with Mexico starting in the summer of 1917, how long do you think it would take? Would America take any land from Mexico, or would they just claim rheparations, or possibly take over the entire country?

What do you think? How would this effect the war in Europe?
