So, WI Eaton & Hamet Karamanli hadn't been betrayed by the US consuls' treaty & the bey of Tripoli ? WI Eaton had been allowed to proceed to take Tripoli with his Marines & mercenaries, as he'd planned ?

Also, there was to be a movie of this story made & released over the last cpl yrs- with Keanu Reeves in the lead role- what impact could such a movie have re the current war on terror & parallels with the Barbary Wars ?

I think there was a feature on this in Wargames Illustrated a few years ago, too.

Well, I think that might actually be what it takes to get war with the Ottomans. Which will be interesting. Will the US stand and fight, or will they practice more of a raiding strategy? (I tend to the former--The US was careful to stay away from Ships of the Line.)

Wasn't the goal to stop piracy? I'm not sure Tripoli could have been taken, as it was fortified, but it had been, the US would have to extract a treaty and then leave, or face war with the Ottomans, and at this time the Ottomans had 22 SoL. They weren't in much of a position to be fighting wars, but I don't think it would really have come up as there was really no chance of a long-term American occupation of Tripoli. It took the Ottomans about 20 years to subdue Tripolitania when they reoccupied in 1835, and that's with knowledge of the area, some degree of proximity, and a larger military establishment, so the US just doesn't have the power projection capabilities in this era to maintain a presence. All that could really be achieved is for American forces to serve the interests of whatever faction they were allied with.
