Willam and Harold

Inspired from the "What if Henry and Richard died at Bosworth" thread and the fact i had an exam on this today :(

What if in 1066 after the Battle of Hastings; with Harold dead, William dies - say he's hit by a lucky arrow as the Saxon shield wall crumbles.

What would happen to England, would Edgar manage to take power support by Stigund?

One of the Norman Lords?

Well, the Normans tried the oldest trick in the book at the time. The feigned
retreat. This drew the right side of the English Shield Wall off the hill where
they were stationed. After drawing them off the hill, they swarmed right back,
cutting them off, and preventing their retreat. Then there were rumors that
William was dead. They were greatly exaggerated. If William had been killed, Harold would have prevailed and William's surviving forces, would have returned to Normandy.

Yeh i know that, what i want peoples opinions on is what if both of them were dead but the Normans have carried the field.

Interesting question, the two main claiments dead, and a Norman Army still there. Who were the main heirs? I know that Harold had a bunch of kids, would some of them come forward?

What about William, who was his heir? What were the personalities of William's Lieutenants? Would they have hared off seekingtheir own kingdoms? What about the English, now that Harold is dead who would the Witan put forward? What about the Pope? Would he lift the excommunication?

Not sure about that, he may have had one son, or i could be imagining it but even there he's going to be very young and his regent will be looking at holding Normandy i would think.

Not sure about his Lieutenants but pretty sure they'd need to join together or be picked off.

Whilst Harold had kids, I can imagine the Witan push Edgar forward with the support/regency of stigund or one of the powerful earls.

Popes in a dodgy situation, think he'd sit back and see what happens

I think in this situation the Witan will go for Edgar (he was proclaimed king by Londoners in OTl after Harold's death), possibly with the Northern Earls acting as some sort of advisors.

I suspect the remaining Normans won't press any claim (no grounds for one), they might do a bit of rape and pillage around Sussex but most likely will realise they are in danger (fresh forces were already forming in London) and will head for their ships and home.
