WIf Constans II in 642 AD Decided to fight it out with the Arabs for Egypt

if Constans II Had not Withdrawn the army from Egypt could he and the roman soldiers hold onto Roman Levant, had Constans took a much Stronger stance and sent all available forces to crush the Arabs could behave succeeded, and find a way to make Gregory the extarch of Carthage from revolting against Byzantines..... Is it posssible.

In a word, no. Constans II was a twelve year old boy when he came to the throne, and, while a fairly impressive Emperor, could not have concievably done much to repel the Arabs at this stage. The great tragedy with the Heraclian line is that all of the Emperors of it showed great promise in their youth, only to die young and see all of their gains reversed.

Constans II

Why bother? Most native Egyptians at this period really detested Byzantine rule, and had practically welcomed the Arab invaders.

For the Romans, Egypt was important. I mean, really, really important. Alexandria and the Nile was basically the lynchpin of all of Africa and Palestine.

The Empire was in such bad shape at this time, that keeping Egypt would have required sacrifices such that the Romans really weren't willing to provide at this point.

It is always sad reading about the byzantines.

They were the last of the romans and with them gone nothing would ever have been the same
