WI: Zangara Kills FDR

Extended Depression, Democrats probably bite it in 1936 if Garner's incompetent, might even be denied his own nomination in favor of a more leftist Democrat like Wallace.

USA probably will enter the war less prepared than OTL, FDR was a master at quietly supporting the Allies and setting up for an eventual entry to a war against popular sentiment at the time.

What would be the implications of Zangara successfully killing President Elect Roosevelt in 1933?
There will probably be huge disagreements on the economic consequences. It may be simpler to notice some probable changes to US policy towards Asia. The Delano family had strong connections with China (see http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1999/fall/roosevelt-family-history-1.html, http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1999/fall/roosevelt-family-history-2.html and http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1999/fall/roosevelt-family-history-3.html). Thus I don't see Garner as likely to oppose Japan so strongly over China. Garner and Cordell Hull both favoured low tariffs, which could lead to a US-Japan clash over Japanese moves towards autarky, but perhaps a deal in which the USA lowers tariffs on Japanese goods is also possible.

I don't know why he would abandon the Democrats rather than just completely hijack them but sure, Long is a possibility, so is Wallace if we're looking for lefties.

I could Long saying that his Share The Wealth the program is the New Deal 2.0 (beauty of it is that FDR did not define what it was) and force Garner out of the Democrat nomination in 1936.

Pretty much, I can see Long as the type of person with enough charisma to actually cost an unpopular incumbent the nomination (which last historically happened with John Tyler as I recall). And yeah, Long's "Every Man a King" stuff is completely similar in principle to the New Deal. It's a Keynesian dream and they both worked quite well for what they accomplished, Long of all people would have no trouble whatsoever playing the "continuing the legacy" card for FDR. Garner would've done the same to maintain his popularity.
