WI: Yukon secessionist movement?

So in the same vain of California & Texas in the mid 19th century, what if American settlement of the Yukon territory during the Klondike Gold Rush gave rise to a troublesome secessionist movement in Canada by 1899?
To cause this, let's say a large contingent of the 100,000 or so prospectors that traveled to the territory begining in 1896, settled long term.

How would the Canadian government react?
Would a violent crackdown cause a war with the US?

The problem with this is that the Canadians had the only effective police force in the area. The Mounties were also policing around the border of Alaska as well.

It wasn't a "wild west" scenario where the settlers came before the law. The police had a presence there.
