Yuan Shikai was what is considered to be the last official emperor of China. After managing to consolidate his power in the first chinese republic as a military dictator, Yuan proclaimed himself emperor in late 1915, in hopes of being accepted by the chinese public, but the reaction was the opposite of what he expected. Civil unrest alongside into warlords breaking off from the central government happened, marking the more definite start of the warlord era. Yuan died from uremia in june 1916.
But what if Yuan had lived longer?
-could his survival pave the way for a monarchist warlord state centered in Beijing?
-i hear that, despite the warlord chaos, many factions of the chinese military remained loyal to him. So what happens with them?
-how large was Yuan's support group within China? How easy is it for him to be assassinated?
-this could lead to odd international affairs. Would most of the western world recognize Yuan's state as the official chinese government?
