From what we know now, Boris Yeltsin, the first President of the Russian Federation, suffered a heart attack in late June/early July of 1996, between the first and second rounds of voting. This was kept secret at the time, and Yeltsin simply retired from the public view on the grounds of exhaustion and sore throat.
What would have happened if his heart attack had been fatal? I'm not too clear on what happens, legally, if a presidential candidate dies before the runoff but after the first round. Would there have been a new "first round" of voting sans Yeltsin soon thereafter?
