Admiral Yamamoto, the architect behind the Pearl Harbor attacks, yet (according to possible popular myth) seemed to be quite reluctant about the task at hand, and held no delusions about his chances against the US, unlike many of his colleagues.

He died during an inspection tour throughout the South Pacific, shot down by American forces.

I'm left wondering, what would've happened had he not died (or not even went?)? He seemed to have a more level head on his shoulders, would he have experienced a "Rommel Moment" (aka: became disillusioned) and tried to end the war in some way? (maybe try to talk to the Emperor, or try to oust Tojo?) Would he, despite his apparent reservations, still push forward in his war efforts, to possibly die in a more grand naval battle?

If he survived to see Japan surrender (like in OTL), I doubt he'd fare well in the post-war trials, since he was the man behind the Pearl Harbor attack. They'd probably make an example out of him.

I'm just wondering, and wanting to know what my fellow AH-nuts think of his prospects or possible outcomes of his surviving.
