WI: XYZ War

I was thinking of making a TL about this, and I wanted professional (in other words, your) opinions upon the subject. Skipping the fact John Adams was logical in prefering diplomacy over war in OTL, let us say John Adams' temper overcomes his sense of logic, and he declares war upon France.

Is it likely France will take over America, or plan an invasion of any kind?
Can a makeshift American Navy be brought about?
How would you feel Canada/Britain would react?

Given that this is still in the Congress Supreme Era -- Have Congress [or several of the Critters] More Insulted. [Public Opinion]
Congress goes to war and carries Adam with them

i just cant see france invading...and if they do then American will no doubt have the support of the Collation including GB so theres that.

Is it 1799, right? France has nothing in America to start an invasion from, except a bloody revolting mess we now call Haiti, where the French revolutionary army at the time was mostly made up of revolted slaves.
Well, if you can figure out a way to ship them to the mainland under the nose of the RN and the American navy, they could swarm through the South bringing their Liberation War against the US, enlarging his army with freedmen all the wat to Washington. :)
That would make that the Revolution endorses the causes of Abolition of Slavery to a point that nobody in France was really willing to.
Toussaint L'Ouverture was a very competent military leader, maybe the best French one after Napoleon. But his army was made from scratch.

Well, it's more likely that the US try to grab some French possessions in the Caribbean and likely try to reinstate slavery there.
I foresee Great Trouble for any American army daring to land in Haiti, for the above reasons.

The idea of a French land invasion was always an illusion. As Adams himself said, they were as likely to find a French army on American shores as they were to find one on the moon. And why would France divert precious resources to invading America when it was engaged in a fight to the death against Britain, Russia, Austria and Prussia?

Because they had a death wish, obviously. :D Not content with fighting a coalition of major powers it wants to take on a minor one as well and risk losing whatever ships it would try to slip by the RN and losing troops it couldn't spare.
