WI WWII was more like Turtledove's Second Great War

(SPOILERS)

The thing I can't get over is how an atomic sneak attack could take place against an enemy capital. That was really hokey.

e: Anyways the point is to make OTL's war more similar to what happened to the analogies in the book. I don't think in real life an atomic sneak attack would happen in a war.

What was more weird was how the CSA was able to deploy an a-bomb before the USA. Especially considering that not only was the USA ahead of the CSA in atomic research...but the #1 atomic researching country (Germany) was helping the US too.

Churchill and Roosevelt at Casablanca:

'All right Churchill,' said Roosevelt, 'have it your way. But I don't trust that DeGaulle, on account of his army's like a one-legged-man in an ass-kicking contest.'

'Well,' said Churchill, clicking his tongue between his teeth, 'the same with Stalin. Does one suppose the red army will leave Europe once it has established a foothold there?'

'I won't tell you you're wrong because you're not...' etc etc.

If I remember correctly, wasn't the confederate "bomb" a large static thing which would have been too large to deliver by plane? THe CSA was assistedy England, right, and had their own expert as well. This might have been enough to cobble together a mass of uranium (plutonium) which could be made to go critical if you don't worrky about actually designing the thing as an aerial bomb. Plus they were perhaps more desparate.
