WI- World War 2 Ceasefire

In July of 1940, France has been out of the war for 2 months, and the British were loosing a war where they stood alone. Churchill, deciding that there was too much to risk, decides to open talks with the Germans.

Hitler, who was seeking a ceasefire, demands it be unconditional. To keep peace, Churchill will cease the war and to pay reparations to the Germans, as well as giving vital nuclear research.

From this point, the change will be.

I think that if Churchill declares a ceasefire, the BUF members would no longer be interred, giving Oswald Mosley and the BUF a chance to take Parliament seats nationwide. In August, Hitler himself visits London to personally sign the ceasefire papers, and to meet with the BUF. He agrees to aid a possible Fascist uprising.

Mosley would lead in several elections in local areas, taking many seats. BUF protests are staged over the next few months and with the funding from the Nazi party, successfully take several parliament seats.

Why would Churchill seek a ceasefire when the invincible(in the eyes of the British people) Royal Navy still protected the shores and the RAF was still going strong. I don't see it. Maybe a different type of cease-fire by a different PM but by Churchill in our OTL scenario=ASB

I agree. A different PM just possibly. There is a scenario with Halifax talking over, although that is also less friendly to the Germans than this. Furthermore, how much Germany demands and how much Britain would be willing to give is quite possibly a deal breaker. Unless Hitler was as eager for peace with Britain as some sources suggested and think its' effectively broken as a short term threat anyway.

Also I think the handing over vital nuclear research is a no-go. Even if Hitler knew of such research in Britain he would probably think of it as worthless Jewish science. Not to mention I don't think anybody in political position at the time thought of nuclear developments as anything but a long shot that needed to be covered and most didn't consider it that.

You'd need someone more dovish than Churchill or Eden on Downing Street. Chamberlain is terminally ill and essentially discredited, but Halifax would work, assuming that he can keep the hawks in line.

Thing is, Halifax is likely to play like FoS's Halifax thread--he's going to peace out with the full intention of preparing for war. No one in England WANTS Germany to dominate Europe, but the choice of continuing the war or allowing Hitler to add the Soviet Union to his list of enemies could be a hard call to make.
