WI Woodrow Wilson dies of stroke in 1916?

First post, please be nice. The POD is that President Wilson suffers a massive stroke and dies on October 2, 1916(in OTL he suffered the stroke 3 years later, and lived). Leaving the election of 1916 up in the air. Would Thomas R. Marshall(assuming he would get the nod, after all he is President) be able to pull off a victory with 36 days left before the election, or would Charles Evans Hughes win it for the Republicans? The most important thing of course would be how this would effect America's involvement in World War I and it's aftermath? Any thoughts?

I wrote a TL in which Wilson died in 1906, and for a second I thought that you were ripping off my idea until I looked closer and saw that it said 1916.

This could be interesting. Hughes would probably win just because it's so close to the election. I think the Democratic Party would be thrown into disarray and by the time they pulled out and started to campaign for Marshall the election would basically be over. Oh, and btw, welcome to the board.

All threads dealing with Wilson's death and all active within the last 100 days.

Sure, your question is "slightly different" because you're killing Wilson off in 1916 instead of 1915 or 1914 or 1906 or 1917 or some other date, but the brushstrokes remain the same.

But this is different because Wilson dies so close to the election. Having a sitting President die shortly before the election would throw his party (and to a lesser extent the entire country) into chaos. That is a big deal, and significantly different. Besides that, give him a break, he's new.

Thank you, TheSevenLeggedFallyDowner. Could it be possible that a few states don't bother to reprint their ballots? Causing several legal battles all over the country, making America go into 1917 without a clear cut winner in the election?

Was that necessary at all?

Trotsky,

The original post or my response?

Seriously, do you want to continually "discuss" the same dozen or so topics over and over and over again every time someone new joins the forum? Is it just going to be WW1, WW2, ACW, ARW, Hitler, et. al. ad naseam with the occasional new idea?

The Search Function is there for a reason, I used it for weeks after I joined and before I first posted, and other members have posted links to threads after repetitive noob OPs.

TSLFD,

Significantly different? Hardly.

Skimming the results from the Search function reveal threads in which Wilson dies after being nominated, after being elected, after being sworn in, etc., etc. There have already been threads that ask essentially what the OP repeated here.

Wilson won the West coast States because he promised to keep America out of the war. Will Marshall be able to hold that promise?? The election was very close, I think Hughes would win.

My guess is a massive wave of sympathy for Democrats. Unless Marshall makes a total idiot in the weeks before the election I guess he wins by rather more than Wilson

Re put downs to questions of What Ifs

This is a site of Alternate History with different idea by different people.
I for one like to see what someone new or old has to say on different subjects. I also understand the use of the search program to see what others have posted on a subject. That use or nonuse of the search program shouldn't be used by some to put down others. You don't like reuse of a subject? DON'T READ IT.
