WI: Winchester Still Capital?

Just a little question and thought here. What if, instead of the capital of England being moved to Westminster. Let's say it's the capital in which the government and Monarch live though Westminster could be a larger city say. Also let's say that instead of Westminster Hall being built in London, the Winchester Castle was actually improved to become the royal residence. So now King William II resided in Winchester, while London prospered financially Winchester prospered through the residence of the King.

Would this stop the fire in Winchester and so actually allow it to prosper with Winchester Cathedral being much larger? What would the affects be on the development of England?

Personally I think there'd be a larger North-South divide with the capital being even further south. But from there my ideas at this late hour run dry.

What do you think? Please discuss.

All the monarchs and government officials would become much more fit, have you seen how fucking hilley that city is?

I'd imagine London becomes de facto capital tho :)

Indeed, London is almost predetermined to become the largest, and thus most economically important, city in England.

In the end, I think London and Winchester would end up having a relationship similar to The Hague and Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
