WI Willkie doesn't enter the Republican contest in 1940?

Exactly as it says on the tin. Even as the Convention started, Dewey led in terms of public support among Republicans and delegates. Might Dewey win the nomination in lieu of Willkie? If so, what does this do for his chances of renomination in 1944 or 1948 after an inevitable loss to Roosevelt in 1940?

Unless Taft gets a lot of momentum, which seems unlikely after 6/22, Dewey will win the nomination. He'll stay out in 1944 and probably run in 1948. I can't shake the feeling that one reason he wasn't nominated IOTL was because of his woeful inexperience- never held statewide office. FDR will definitely make hay with that in the campaign.
