WI: William's Invasion of England Fails

What if the Norman Conquest of England failed due to better English preparations. It was expected for some time and i think with some more prep they could have had a shot at beating Willy. What if they do?

England focuses less on France and the continent and more on Scandinavian affairs. We'll have a much more Norse-influenced Britain in culture, language and politics.

King Harold butchers/holds for ransom the surviving Norman and Breton troops. If William the Bastard is captured alive, he is doubtless forced to renounce any claims to England and ransomed at a ruinous price. The relations between the Papacy and the English will be soured, with possible a split with Rome if the Pope does not recognize the political triumph of the Godwinsons.

I imagine the following years of Harold's reign will be spent in shoring up defenses in the southeast, and defending against any further Norse incursions. The death of Hardrada will help in the effort of confirming Harold's authority over the North.

Don't think so. Scandinavia was already declining massively from its viking days. There isn't much motivation for England to mess around in some backwater. Do agree that it wouldn't mess around in France to the extent it did in OTL though.

Lpnger term, incursions into Wales and a watchful eye on the Scots. Given the language similarities, closer relations with Frisia, the Flemish and the HRE.
