WI William IX Margrave of Montferrat assumes the Byzantine Crown in 1502?

In 1502 the last direct claimant of the Byzantine Crown Andreas Palaeologus died after he had sold his title to the Aragonese King...
By that time there was another Palaeologian who had a claim to the Byzantine Crown... William IX Palaeologus Margrave of Montferrat...
WI he declared himself Emperor of Byzantium in 1502? Could he had provoked a Crusade against the Ottomans (with the help of France or another foreign power)?
Any thoughts?

the 16th century is WAY too late for a crusade, if he claimed the title nothing would come of it, he would have no means to enforce it anything.

William IX

I remember vaguely that the Margaves of Montferrat were descendents of the Byzantine emperor Andronicus II. However, they were also Roman Catholics, which would limit their popularity with the Greeks.
