When I was in New York City on Friday, I was somewhat surprised that one of the MTA ticket machines gave me one-dollar coins in change. I did not know that they were actually in circulation. I was more surprised to find out later that, much unlike Canada with its loonie, the United States has been reluctant to embrace its perfectly serviceable metal one-dollar coin to the point of transit agencies and banks being among the few to accept them.
How can this be changed? Can this be changed easily, or is there a deep bias against metal one-dollar coins at work in the United States that has to be worked against, and if so, what would have to be done?
