What if Dutch-style "Genever" Gin had become the main alcoholic drink of New Netherland, and stayed as such into the late 18th century? It was certainly possible, as Gin existed at least as early as 1600, the false legend of Doctor Sylvius notwithstanding, and Juniper can be grown in new York. Assuming that the switch to gin wouldn't have butterflied the English takeover, what would have been the economic, cultural, and political results of New York not being part of the colonial rum culture?
