From 1195 to 1198, Richard the Lionheart tried negotiating with William the Lion of Scotland for a marriage between William's daughter and heiress, Margaret, to Otto Weld, Richard's nephew and future Holy Roman Emperor. These negotiations lasted until the birth of the future Alexander II in 1198.

Let's say Alexander II dies stillborn or isn't born at all and William finally gives in. If Margaret marries Otto and William dies without producing any sons, who would become the monarch - Margaret or Otto? If Otto, would he find being King of Scotland to be any easier than being Holy Roman Emperor?
