WI: Warren Over Sanders

How might Elizabeth Warren have fared if she'd run in 2016 rather than Bernie Sanders? I'm imagining better, possibly beating Clinton; she'd still potentially be the first woman, she wouldn't be a self-declared socialist, and it'd be fairly easy to draw more positive contrasts between her and Clinton as they'd both be seen as similar yet Warren decisively more progressive

To answer your question: Elizabeth Warren would do much better as the insurgent candidate than Bernie Sanders. Sanders is weighed down not only be being a self-declared socialist, but also by his age and the fact that he had not been a Democrat long enough. Although she'd have an easier time than Sanders, it will still be difficult for her to beat the favorite-daughter of the Democrats, as Hillary has the Establishment lined up behind her. Warren also hasn't served long enough as a Senator to match up against Hillary's two terms in the Senate and tenure as Secretary of State.

I could very well see 2008 repeating itself if it were Warren instead of Bernie and I say that as someone who like Bernie more than Warren (and I like both a lot), just due to the fact that Bernie, a self declared 74 year old Democratic Socialist and Independent turned Democrat, managed to give Hillary a run for her money at points in the campaign. Warren isn't a self declared socialist and has been a Democrat for 20 years (she was a Republican until the mid '90s, but Hillary wouldn't be able to attack her on that because Hillary herself was a Republican until the 1970s).

If Warren really wanted to be president, I think she could beat Clinton. If she got pressured into running and just went through the motions to raise awareness for her issues though, she probably wouldn't win.

Sanders is only 6 years older than Clinton, and he'd caucused with the Democrats for decades. People would point out that Warren was a Republican until 1996, and frankly she doesn't have the spirit/fire that Sanders done - she lacks the capability to drive her supporters. She'd do worse than Sanders.
