WI Walter O'Malley dies in 1950?

PoD: February of 1950

Dodger owner Walter O'Malley, one of four owners of the Brooklyn Dodgers (the others were Branch Rickey, John L. Smith (who died in 1950), and James and Dearie Mulvey) is killed in a car accident as spring training is about to start.

Effects, anyone?

For one, William Shea, later owner of the Mets and of course the man whom Shea Stadium is named after, may well come on board as an owner. Dreams of this colossal stadium witha dome and such never come to pass, but we might see the Dodgers in Flushing.

The Ebbets Dome May come to fruition, but what of the Giants? I understand there were plans to move the team to Minnesota, so does that kill the rivalry?

At the time, the AL had no team farther west than the A’s in Kansas City, but if the Giants move to Minnesota, this cuts off early MLB west of Kansas City but it also cuts off the Senators moving to Minnesota. I have to believe they move somewhere, though, and it’s possible they dip their toe in going to California. One other possibility is Texas - the second Senators became the Texas Rangers, so it would make sense for the first Rangers to beat them to the punch.

It also means that the first round of expansion is changed. Originally the NL went to Houston and back to NYC with the Mets, while the AL went to DC and LA. If the AL sticks with the Angels, the other team would almost have to be in San Francisco. More likely, the NL gets the California teams while the AL gets the replacement Senators and the Astros (yes, I know they were briefly the Colt .45s but Houston would prefer to forget the early years when they might as well have been called the Mosquitoes.)

Anywho, the league’s probably look like this after the 1962 expansion:

AL
Baltimore Orioles
Boston Red Sox
Chicago White Sox
Cleveland Indians
Detroit Tigers
Houston Astros (expansion)
Kansas City Athletics
New York Yankees
Texas Rangers
Washington Senators (expansion)

NL
Brooklyn Dodgers
Chicago Cubs
Cincinnati Reds
Los Angeles Angels (expansion)
Milwaukee Braves
Minnesota Giants
Philadelphia Phillies
Pittsburgh Pirates
San Francisco Seals (expansion)
St. Louis Cardinals

The issue to remember is that the moves of the Athletics to KC and Braves to Milwaukee were unstable, but for different reasons. For the A's, it was greed, as Finley thought the Bay area would do him better, a decision he later regretted, especially since KC had committed itself to a very modern, state-of-the-art sports complex. And Royals fans became very loyal. The Braves saw the southern market more lucrative, since Milwaukee still had a partial Chicago fan base. Had the Braves moved to KC and Lamar Hunt did what he did in 1963, would name synergy keep the Braves there: Braves/Chiefs, Cubs/Bears, Lions/Tigers?
