WI: Walter Cronkite ran for President?

So what if Walter Cronkite ran for President? When would be the best time for him to do it? Would he have had to gain political credentials beforehand, and if so, what political positions would he need to serve in? What sort of campaign would he probably run? Could he win, and if so, how? Finally, if he won, what sort of Presidency would he have?

The one time he was actually considered for Presidential Politics was when he was considered as possibly becoming John Anderson's running mate during his 1980 Independent Campaign. Nothing came of it, and I am not sure if the idea was even brought up with Cronkite.

I think there was a point where RFK wanted him to run against Javits in '68, but I am not sure if there was any substance to that, or if it was more than a rumor.

There was an article posted awhile back that had a quote from Cronkite himself saying he would have ran as a VP back in the 60s or 70s (can't remember the specific ticket) on an anti-war platform.

Probably McCarthy. Can't imagine him running with McGovern.

Well, now I have two separate projects to work on! :p

Anyway, there is no way that Cronkite would have agreed to run with George McGovern, there would be disagreements over too many positions. As for Cronkite running for Kennedy's Senate Seat, well, those difficulties I guess could be surmounted and thus put him in the running for later during his life.

Well, he's quoted as saying he would have... Granted, second hand, but still, that's pretty weighty.
