WI: Walt Disney's Doctor Who

The question is, if Disney was successful in establishing a Doctor Who American version for the show, what would we expect?

  • Totally Animated Version (voice actors)
  • Live Action/Animated Mix (Pixar-esque/Disney Animated)

There was potential for Disney to create a version by Fall 1994 (maybe for ABC). What would be the POD for this to be successful?

Would this have been a diverging point for Disney to delve into an older, broader audience by starting DW? Also, who would dare be the Eighth Doctor in this version? Would it be anywhere near as Disney-fied as everything else, or just a fair amount with relation to the classic British tradition? And would it be a good idea to bring Bob Baker into this version to prove success over the seas?

If they animated it, would it be done in house, outsourced to Nelvana or both? BTW, Disney did have connections to the UK for a while.

With Spielberg attached? I expect they'd want to do it in house. This would be an event, regardless of what they do with the property (movie or show).

If Disney would do it as a show, and have a success, it could change their entire approach to television. Early Disney TV was 100% mercenary in nature, any real quality was simply a nice bonus. If American Doctor Who takes off, you might see Disney take TV seriously as a medium. In the most extreme possibility, you might not see the 90's Disney Renaissance at all if Disney decides to go for broke on TV. Remember that the 80's weren't a very good period for Disney, they'd been struggling in theatres ever since Walt died. They hadn't had a real hit film since The Jungle Book, and a TV hit might cause a total realignment of the company.

Reinventing the wheel

I don't know if this helps or hinders, but different versions of "Doctor Who" crop up at various times on ah.com. Here are some previous threads

Doctor Who?

Owned by Americans!

The DWAS would do to Disneyland what the Redcoats did to Washington in 1812!

The last time they did that, they got caught in a hurricane in the mid-Atlantic region. Imagine how bad it would be if they move all the way down to Florida?

Torqumada

It depends on whether the BBC would be willing to accept Disney's offer, but one thing is for sure, not many people would like it if it did happen.

BTW what does DWAS mean?
