WI: WALL-E Wins the 2008's Oscar for Best Picture

On the one hand, animation just got a lot of credibility, since the only other animated film to even be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar was Beauty and the Beast, but on the other hand, its Pixar and even a bad Pixar movie is head and shoulders about pretty much everything else. I think a more challenging POD would be to get an Oscar win for The Iron Giant. It's good enough and there were people who were campaigning for a thanksgiving re-release and a Best Picture nomination.

The Iron Giant was released in 1999, so it would compete for the 2000's Oscar, right? The rivals would be Gladiator (the winner), Chocolat, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Erin Brockavich and Traffic.
Maybe The Iron Giant would enter in the place of Chocolat, but would beat the other contenders?
The "Best Animated Feature" only started in 2001...

Hey Joshua, You know I love Wall-E as much as anyone, but I still hold that the film that should have won the Award that year was Frost Vs Nixon.

The Pixar that should have won was Up. I think it was a better film than the other nine that were nominated. It is my favorite pixar film ahead of Wall-E and the Incredible. (And you know I love my Superheroes).

Up created two fantastic characters, Carl Fredrickson and Russell.
The Characters interested me more then the Animation or effects.
A
(Also Does anyone know where I can get two if those talking Dog Collars? I look everywere for them for my Dogs)

Up is a beautiful film, tempted to say a master work from Pixar - definitely worthy of a Best Picture Oscar

Wall-E is pretty tedious in parts

Remember that the voting is "First Past the Post," whoever gets the most votes wins. They changed that in 2009, when there were 10 nominees and IRV determined the winner.

So a bunch of other equally strong movies splitting the vote for WALL-E could propel it into the lead, in theory. In practice the Academy is full of really really old guys, so animation doesn't have much of a shot.

I was thinking of vote spltting as a way to WALL-E win, through a very narrow margin.

But the question stands - what would be the consequences if a movie of two ghettos (Science Fiction *and* Animation) win the Best Picture Oscar? Would it open for other animation and science fiction movies (like Up and Inception)? Or the rules would be changed to prevent it?

If by splitting the vote WALL-E had won , we may have seen more Animated Film. But like most movie fads, most of the films would not be that good.

I don't think that science fiction movie would find it easier to be consider for Best Film, because Hollywood would view WALL-E as a animation film more than a Sci Fi film.

Even with the chosing of Ten Best picture nomination, If WALL-E had won. it would not help UP or Inception, or Avatar, which were nominated in OTL.
