He certainly wouldn't be the first politician - and there's evidence to suggest that he was just a heavy social drinker, rather than a clinical alcoholic, so it's unlikely to have impaired his performance much.

No, not so much because Evangelicals disapprove of drinking as because his personal narrative of quitting drinking (which includes Billy Graham) made him seem more culturally appealing to Evangelicals whose beliefs emphasize being "born again." Without that aspect of his biography, he would have faced the same challenges attracting Evangelical voters as his father did.
