WI: VP Candidate Margaret Chase Smith, 1964

What if Goldwater had chosen Margaret Chase Smith instead of William E. Miller for his vice presidential candidate for 1964? Certainly he would not have won, but what ground could he have made up, and what future repercussions would this have politically as you would have the first serious woman vice presidential candidate in US history.

I doubt Smith would've had a political future but it's reasonable to assume Ferraro wouldn't have been chosen in 1984, which could've saved her reputation enough to become Senator or something. I would suggest Shirley Chisholm could do better ITTL but still not win. By '96 a woman candidate in the Presidential Field for the primaries would not be uncommon and maybe in 2004 you'd have a woman nominated (hard to say who because of the butterflies)
