WI: Vermont Remains Independent

What would be the effects of Vermont retaining it's independence, rather than joining the Union?

Since the state was a counter-balance to Kentucky, a slave state, there might be an issue there.

One of Vermont's things was being radically abolitionist from a very early stage. I wonder if it might have been the destination of enough escaped slaves to have ended up with a significant PROPORTION of African Americans.

Query would Southern ultras have tried to attack it if a Vermont Republic took such a role?

Might an independent Vermont have offered LIncoln support after January 1863?
