WI: Venezuala invades Dutch Caribbean Territories

Don't you keep some F-16s down there as well?

I was in Curacao on vacation 2 years ago and was driving around the back side of the airport (the military side). At that time there were several military aircraft there including 2 USAF AWACs, 1 USAF KC-135, 1 USN P-3, 1 USCG C-130, and 1 RNAF twin engine transport.

I don't know if this was the usual amount of aircraft that were normally based there or not , but with this much surveillance capability there would be little chance for a surprise attack.

How capable of the Venezuelan military? I've not heard good things.

6 light frigates, 2 submarines, 8 landing ships Navywise.

Somewhere around 110,000 personnel total IIRC.

About 300ish tanks. And 50ish planes IIRC (other than transports and the like.)

So, I have to agree good things would not be in store.

Lol. This is so extremely implausible that's it's funny. Even Taxi Maduro isn't that stupid.

Ah whatever I'll roll with it. Simple answer really, NATO. Unlike Guyana there is no reason, as stupid as that one is, at all as well

I was about to mention that even Maduro of "Chávez came to me as a little birdie" fame hasn't done anything that belligerent, and his idea of helping Venezuela is forcing electronic chains to give people TVs. Chávez was smarter than Maduro, making this scenario even less likely under his presidency. Invading anywhere would irreparably damage the anti-imperialist Chavista narrative, even if Venezuela really wanted part of Guyana. When Chávez was aggressive, it always seemed to be more covert operations rather than sending in the troops.

A few links on Maduro and Chávez explaining some of the references in this post:

Neither Chavez nor Maduro would do that, because they aren't stupid. It would invite an immediate response in the form of a US-backed coup which would be very, very successful and have widespread support.

Your best bet for a Dutch-Venezuelan War is to have Cipriano Castro get serious about fighting the Dutch over those islands in the Caribbean. He got his country blockaded in 1908 for some beligerant actions taken regarding them.

It wouldn't be a NATO situation due to the location. It would be more of an informal rendering of assistance to a longtime friend and ally.

Same can of whup-ass, different shelf.

Probably why even at the most desperate the Venezuelan government wouldn't do it. The current (and immediately preceding) government believes that the U.S. is looking for any excuse to depose them and this scenario would be a gift wrapped invitation.
