WI: Varus belived Segestes warning

Just as the title said. What is Varus has accepted that Arminius was plotting a betrayal when Segestes came to him?

Then he probably would not have been ambushed in Teoteburg *thats not how you spell that* Teutoburg Forest *there we go*. I highly doubt though that the Romans would be able to tame the Germans.

The Romans proved time and time again that they could tame the Germans. Germanicus utterly crushed them after the battle and the Romans intervened in Germany until the Crisis of the 3rd Century whenever a threat to their interest was posed. Varus, fighting the Germans in something other than an ambush, probably would have won despite his utter military incompetence due to the superiority of the legions.

The reason that a concerted effort after Teutoberg was never made to capture Germania was that it wouldn't be worth the price of conquest. The Rhine was defensible, the Oder was not, and unlike the Gauls, the Germans were poor and had no institutions that Rome could latch its own onto. It would be a less isolated and poorer Brittania without silver mines. Not worth it.
