Despite the 1840 election being a wide gap between the two candidates in both the popular and electoral vote, what if Van Buren had won? This would actually be easier than it looks as a few northern states( N.Y. Penn N.J. and Maine) went to Harrison by narrow margins. If a couple thousand key votes had been changed in the north(the log cabin reference that Harrison uses has a few words about slavery in it for instance) Van Buren would have won the electoral vote by 150-144 despite losing the popular vote on an order of 47% to 52& or so. This would make Van Buren and the democrats in a very weak position with a minority elected administration, and for the whigs Harrison would probably wear a coat at the second inaugural address of Van Buren.
What do people think the consequences would be?
