So I've been looking into this battle and wondering why tihs isn't discussed more. The Battle of Edessa was where Shapur crushed Valerian's army (somewhere between Carrhae and Edessa) in 259, with an army half its size (Valerian had 70,000 men). Valerian was captured, and on Shapur's march back to Persia, Odonathus made a hastily raised Palmyrene army, ambushed Shapur, and was basically given command over the eastern provinces by Gallerius.
So what are the effects if Valerian crushed Shapur instead, capturing or killing the Sassanid King?
